Institute for Policy Research Explainer Videos

The Institute for Policy Research (IPR) is an interdisciplinary public policy research institute founded in 1968 at Northwestern University. They came to our department (The Office of Global Marketing and Communication) to help them get out their message and communicate what they do at IPR. The solution was to create a brand video and 5 supplemental videos that highlighted some faculty research. We wanted the supplemental research videos to have infographic animations to tell the stories combined with b-roll, and faculty interviews.

I art directed and animated the infographic portions that went into the videos. It was an extensive project with a lot of animation. I went through mood boards, character development, title card development, and story boards to effectively develop these animations.

Video and Social Media

Storyboard

Below is 1 of 5 storyboards created for the 5 videos.

Title Card Exploration

Each of the five explainer videos starts out with a question. It was important to find a treatment that would work with all videos and anchor the theme and approach.

IPR Digital Ads

To advertise IPR, we leveraged the videos created to make digital ads for paid advertising. The question and magnifying glass was a unifying theme throughout these videos so we used that concept for these ads. The copy and sparing image use was intentional to keep the viewer engaged and encourage clicking to find out more.
